Student Václav Karel wrote us: “As part of my 6th year pre-graduation internship in internal medicine, I have decided to use the opportunity to study abroad, this time at King´s College in London, UK. My stay was financially supported by Mobility Fund.
I spent 4 weeks at the end of last year practicing in multiple ICU units, also in the Pulmonary and Cardiology inpatient wards at King´s College London Hospital, one of the biggest hospitals in South London. Although the application process was long and administratively arduous (partially because of the UK not being part of the EU), the warm welcome, the support and care I was granted by the local colleagues was worth all the effort. I was assigned a personal ´consultant/mentor´ at every department – always a doctor with years of experience – who dedicated plenty of time assisting me during my stay. Perhaps the biggest surprise, even shock, was the complete absence of physical documentation! NHS invested heavily into digitalization, resulting in most doctors and nurses not ever needing a pen. In fact, most of the work was done on their personal computers.
Afternoons and weekends offered plenty of free time for me to explore the beauties of London, with the greatest highlight being the West Ham Premier League Match I somehow managed to get the tickets for. I cannot recommend abroad internships enough to all students. The trips are always one in a life time opportunity to gain experience and broaden one´s horizons. Not to mention all the new friends and future colleagues and contacts!”
