My 33 years with HIV
prof. MUDr. Ladislav Machala, Ph.D.
|
Prof. MUDr. Ladislav Machala, Ph.D. (1954*) graduated from the former Faculty of Pediatrics, nowadays the 2nd Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University, in 1979. His main professional interests lie in topics like HIV resistance to antiretroviral therapy, toxoplasmosis in immunocompromised patients and neurological complications of HIV/AIDS.
He got involved in the HIV/AIDS problematics after its first appearances in the Czech Republic, as early as in 1985, when he became a part of a professional team lead by Doc. MUDr. Marie Staňková, CSc – the founder of HIV patients care system -, who later chose him as her successor. After her retirement he became the chief of the AIDS center of the Na Bulovce hospital, where he has been working ever since.
Interestingly, prof. Machala suffers from a rare condition called musical anhedonia. He prefers spending his leisure time outdoors as he enjoys walking in a forest, searching for unusual plants and mushrooms, and observing butterflies.
This year we can look forward to his upcoming lecture on “My 33 years with HIV“ at the Student research conference.
