On Thursday July 18th at Karolinum, after 5 graduation ceremonies, we were honored to welcome over 200 new graduates and our new colleagues At least one fifth were international students who will return to their families and start their medical career in their home countries. Nonetheless, most graduates will be staying at clinics and institutions across Czechia. All fresh graduates were undoubtedly very proud of receiving their own General Medicine diploma.
The wearing summer heat did not stop the speakers from giving their best graduation speeches. Messages of appreciation and gratitude were aimed not only at one´s parents, partners, colleagues, study department and academics, but also the best lunch lady for her filling meals and words of encouragement when they were most needed. Last but not least, the infamous ´Monster´ cans, absence of which would certainly make surviving the harsh study routines much more onerous. Johan Skalický, one of the graduates, concluded with a witty rhetorical question – „Would I do it again you ask? Only if was with the same classmates!“
The Dean´s speech touched on not only the important topics of medicine, war and hope, but also the more light-hearted themes, such as the lakes in South Bohemia, religion and love. He also made an effort to translate the oath we all have to take as part of becoming a medical worker, which in return made the teachers appreciative that they finally got to find out what they “got themselves into” years ago …
Biggest congratulations to all the graduates! Treasure your Alma Mater in your memories, the same way we will forever remember and be proud of you.
